What topics will be covered in this qualification?

The course covers child development, educational theory, classroom management, health and safety practices, curriculum planning, child psychology, and effective communication with children and families. Our aim is to provide a well-rounded understanding of early childhood education.

How long is the course duration?

To be deemed competent, you must complete a total of 1,310 notional hours, which are divided into the following:

Knowledge Modules: 430 hours (3 months)
Practical Modules: 430 hours (3 months)
Workplace Modules: 450 hours, to be completed over a 4-month period at your designated workplace. Workplace placement will begin in the 4th month of your studies. This placement is full-time and unpaid, and you are expected to treat it with the same dedication and commitment as you would a job.

We allocate an additional 2 months to help you prepare for the EISA exam. Please note that the EISA exam is held twice a year, in February and October. Depending on when you start your course, you will be scheduled to sit for the exam in the corresponding month.

How does this course prepare me for working with children?

The course blends theory with practical experience, equipping you with knowledge of child development stages, behavior management techniques, and strategies for creating engaging and supportive learning environments. You’ll also gain hands-on experience during your practicum placements.

Are there any practical or hands-on components as part of the training?

Yes, practical experience is a key component of the course. Students will engage in a practicum placement at an ECD workplace where they will be guided and assessed by experienced mentors.

How do I find an ECD workplace for my practical training?

Through our network, we will place you with a workplace partner to complete your required workplace hours. We aim to match you with a partner located as close as possible to your area.

What types of assessments will I need to complete during the course?

Assessments include assignments, projects, practical observations, tests, and the EISA (External Integrated Summative Assessment) exam. These ensure you demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and readiness to work in the ECD field. 

What is the EISA exam?

The EISA exam is administered as a final evaluation of your competencies. It tests both theoretical knowledge and practical application. Passing requires a strong understanding of the course material and proficiency in applying ECD principles in real settings.

What happens if I fail the EISA exam?

If you do not pass, you’ll have the opportunity for remedial support and, a chance to retake the assessment. We’re here to help ensure you succeed.

What career opportunities are available after completing this qualification?

You can pursue roles such as an ECD practitioner, daycare center teacher, assistant teacher, or Au Pair/Nanny, with potential placements through our private homecare network. This qualification also opens doors to opportunities in curriculum development or child care advocacy.

Is this qualification recognized nationally and internationally?

Who accredits this program, and what level is it on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF)?

The program is accredited by QCTO and is at NQF Level 4, making it a recognized and valid qualification.

Will I receive a formal certificate upon completion?

Yes, you will receive a certificate of attendence through CareChamp College and your official qualification certificate will be received by QCTO 3 months after completing your EISA.

Are there any additional costs for materials, books, or exams?

There are no additional costs for textbooks, practical materials, and exams as this is included in cost. All materials will be loaded onto your online student profile.

What are the entry requirements for this qualification?

National Certificate Vocational (NCV) at NQF Level 3 (grade 11), or any other NQF Level 3 qualification.

What are the main expenses I should include in my student budget?

Transportation: For your workplace modules, travel may be necessary; however, we will strive to place you at an ECD center within close proximity. Additionally, some ECD centers may offer a small stipend to help with travel expenses.

When do your intakes take place for ECD?

Our Early Childhood Development (ECD) intakes take place 3 times a year, in January, May and September.

Yes! This qualification is delivered 100% online with the flexibility to learn anytime, from anywhere.

What is the time commitment?

Our Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme is delivered online, allowing you to study at your own pace while meeting all QCTO requirements.

  • Attendance tracking: Your progress and time spent on the platform are tracked to meet QCTO compliance.
  • Credit-linked commitment: Each module’s credits reflect the hours required to complete the learning and assessments.
  • How credits work: In QCTO qualifications, 1 credit equals 10 notional hours of learning. This includes reading, online activities, assignments, and preparation for assessments.
  • Estimated study time: The full ECD Practitioner NQF Level 4 course is 131 credits, which equates to approximately 1,310 hours of total learning over the programme duration. Learners typically spend 8–10 hours per week engaging with coursework to stay on track.
  • Flexible learning: You can choose when to study each week, but regular engagement is expected to complete modules on time.

Azrah Holdman
Facilitator

With over 11 years of experience in both formal ECD center's and private early learning settings. She holds a National N Diploma (N6) obtained in 2014 and an NQF Level 5 ECD qualification completed in 2023. Her experience includes 3 years as a Grade R teacher, 4 years in registered ECD center's, and 9 months as a teacher’s assistant, totaling over 7 years of formal ECD experience. She also spent 4 years providing private care, supporting children’s early learning and development in home-based environments. Her diverse background equips her to deliver QCTO-aligned training with practical insight, preparing students for real-world work with young children across a variety of settings.
